FLIGHT

Flight is a community-sourced sculpture for the 2022 Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts, in which origami birds carry the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the Brandeis community. By asking community members to write down their hopes and dreams and participate in folding the birds, as well as walk through and around the installed sculpture, Flight encourages the Brandeis community to recognize that despite the ongoing pandemic, social unrest, and political upheaval, resilience and resistance is possible.

Flight borrows from the Japanese tradition of origami, the art of folding paper. It specifically borrows from the ancient Japanese legend that anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish by the gods.  The birds of Flight, a simplified form of the crane, symbolize the granting of the hopes, dreams, and aspirations folded within them.
